With Major League Soccer just kicking off its 25th season, I thought I’d take a look back through the league’s history and select a 25 player roster of the best players in MLS history as part of the anniversary celebration.
Now I’m sure many people wonder if we’d had any actual good soccer players in a league so young, especially when the league struggled to gain footing in the early days and had to fold franchises just to keep the league running.
Well we’re far away from that now, with 26 teams set to take part in the 2020 season, including expansion franchises in Miami and Nashville. The league is thriving like never before as soccer continues to grow in popularity in the U.S. In just a few years the league will have 30 teams, adding franchises in Austin, St. Louis, Charlotte and Sacramento. The league continues to expand and attract talent like never before, no longer a retirement league as it was once viewed.
A league lasting 25 years is a big deal in this country, especially considering the previous longest-lasting outdoor soccer league in the U.S. – which lasted 50 years – folded in 1983.
So as MLS celebrates its diamond anniversary, here are my picks for the top players in league history, counting down from 25 to one.
25. Diego Valeri (MF) 2013-present – Portland
A four-time MLS All-Star and three-time Best XI selection, Valeri made an instant impact in Portland after arriving in 2013. In 2015 he helped the club win its first MLS Cup title, being named MLS Cup MVP.
In a career 2017 season, Valeri picked up the MLS MVP Award, tallying 21 goals and 11 assists while the Timbers finished atop the Western Conference.
In seven years with Portland, Valeri has helped the club reach the postseason five times and also reach the MLS Cup final in 2018.
