Every week on Stadium Sportzz, we will be posting weekly reviews of the three major men’s college basketball programs in the state.

With college basketball season just underway, let’s take a look at the results for each of the teams as they push for a bid to the 2022 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

BYU Cougars (6-0)

With six wins from six, the Cougars seem to be on track to return to the NCAA Tournament in March.

Wednesday vs. Texas Southern – Won 81-64

Taking on a winless team from the SWAC, BYU controlled the game from start to finish, scoring a comfortable win.

Te’Jon Lucas scored 18 points to lead BYU, while Gideon George added a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds. Fousseyni Traore scored 13 off the bench, while Alex Barcello added 12.

As a team, the Cougars outrebounded Texas Southern 52-38 while holding the visitors to just 17.6 percent from three (3-of-17).

Saturday @ Utah – Won 75-64

In the biggest in-state rivalry game of the season, the Cougars pulled away from Utah late in a battle of the unbeatens. 

Trailing by two at halftime, BYU outscored the Utes 48-35 in the second half to record a double-digit win.

Te’Jon Lucas led the Cougars with 18 points, while Alex Barcello added 17, making 11 of his 12 free throw attempts.

Gavin Baxter scored 14 for BYU, and Caleb Lohner added a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Cougars shot 45.5 percent from the field (30-of-66) in the win, outrebounding the Utes 45-28.

Up next

BYU now faces in-state rival Utah Valley of the WAC on Wednesday night on the road before facing Missouri State from the Missouri Valley Conference on Saturday in Springfield.

The game against the Wolverines will tip off at 7 p.m. and can be seen on BYUtv. The matchup against the Bears can be viewed on CBS Sports Network and airs at 2 p.m.
