Every week on Stadium Sportzz, we will be posting weekly reviews of the three major men’s college basketball programs in the state.

With college basketball season just underway, let’s take a look at the results for each of the teams as they push for a bid to the 2022 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

BYU Cougars (7-1)

Falling to in-state foe Utah Valley, the Cougars fell from the ranks of the undefeated before rebounding with a win on Saturday.

Wednesday @ Utah Valley – lost 72-65 (OT)

Facing UVU on the road in Orem, BYU fell for the first time this season.

Leading by two at halftime, the Cougars fell behind late before rallying back to force overtime.

The Wolverines fed off the home crowd energy, pulling away in the extra period to hand BYU its first loss.

Alex Barcello scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead BYU, while Spencer Johnson added 15 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Seneca Knight and Te’Jon Lucas each chipped in with 10 points for the Cougars.

BYU shot just 31.9 percent from the field, making only 7 out of 27 three-pointers (25.9 percent).

Saturday @ Missouri State – won 74-68

After suffering its first loss of the season, BYU rebounded with a road win at Missouri State.

Alex Barcello led the Cougars with 21 points, who improved to 7-1 with the win.

Te’Jon Lucas added 17 points for BYU, while Spencer Johnson chipped in 14 points.

The Cougars shot 48.2 percent from the field in the Quad 1 resume-boosting victory over the Bears.

Up next

Dropping from No. 12 to 24 in the latest AP poll, BYU has a pair of games this week to try and move back up in the rankings.

The Cougars will face in-state rival Utah State at home on Wednesday before traveling to South Dakota to face Big East Conference member Creighton on Saturday morning.

The game against the Aggies will tip-off at 7 p.m. and can be seen on BYUtv. The matchup against the Bluejays can be viewed on FS1 and airs at 10 a.m.
