Women’s volleyball took center stage over the weekend, as all seven Utah schools opened the 2022-23 season participating in numerous tournaments while looking to start the year on a positive note.

BYU Football season preview: Is this finally the year?

No. 10 BYU

Opening the season hosting the doTerra Classic, BYU finished with a perfect 3-0 record to take the tournament title.

The Cougars began the tournament with a 3-0 win over Rider on Friday afternoon, followed up by defeating Duke 3-1 later in the evening. They capped the tournament with a 3-0 victory over Washington State on Saturday night.

Up next, BYU (3-0) hosts another early-season tournament this week. They’ll face in-state rival Utah State on Thursday, September 1 at 7 p.m., followed by a match with Cincinnati on Friday, September 2 at 7 p.m. The Cougars will conclude the BYU Nike Invitational by taking on Pitt on Saturday, September 3 at 7 p.m.

Utah State football: Aggies open season with an ugly home win

Utah State

The defending Mountain West champions started off the season with a bang over the weekend.

Hosting the Utah State Invitational on Friday, the Aggies defeated Cal Poly in the first match of the doubleheader, 3-1.

Utah State then faced No. 12 UCLA in the evening to cap off the tournament. The Aggies defeated the Bruins 3-1, winning its first matchup against a ranked opponent since defeating No. 3 Hawai’i in 2010 while ending the opening week with a 2-0 record.

Utah State (2-0) will now head to Provo to take part in the BYU Nike Invitational. They will face the rival Cougars on Thursday, September 1 at 7 p.m., before matching up with Pitt on Friday, September 2 at 5 p.m. The Aggies then close the tournament with a match against Cincinnati on Saturday, September 3 at 3 p.m.

Weber State

The Wildcats hosted the Wildcat Invitational Championship, winning the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record.

The three-time defending Big Sky champions opened the weekend with a 3-0 win over UC Riverside on Friday afternoon. They then took down in-state rival Southern Utah in the evening 3-1, before clinching the title with a 3-1 victory over San Jose State on Saturday night.

Weber State (3-0) will travel to Las Vegas to participate in the UNLV Tournament this week. The Wildcats will face the host Rebels on Thursday, September 1 at 7 p.m. before matching up against St. John’s on Friday, September 2 at 7 p.m.

Weber State will conclude the tournament by taking on Miami on Saturday, September 3 at 4 p.m.

State of Utah FBS college football: 2022 schedule breakdown and predictions

No. 22 Utah

The Utes opened the season hosting the Utah Classic, posting a 2-1 record.

Utah began the tournament with a 3-0 win over Loyola Marymount on Friday morning before falling 3-1 to No. 23 Kansas in the evening. The Utes then closed the tournament with a 3-0 victory over in-state foe Utah Valley on Saturday.

Up next

The Utes (2-1) will travel to Lafayette, Indiana to take part in the Purdue Tournament this weekend. They fill face Milwaukee on Friday, September 2 at 10 a.m. before a matchup with host Purdue at 5:30. Utah will close the weekend with a match against Bradley on Saturday, September 3 at 10 a.m.

Utah Tech

Participating in the NAU Lumberjack Classic over the weekend, the Trailblazers won two of three matches to open the season.

Utah Tech took down tournament host Northern Arizona 3-1 on Friday morning, before trouncing Old Dominion 3-0 later in the day. The Trailblazers finished the week with a 3-1 defeat to Michigan on Saturday evening.

SUU soccer wins home opener, historic start continues

Southern Utah

Southern Utah opened the season taking part in the Weber State Tournament, finishing 0-3.

The T-birds fell 3-1 to both San Jose State and host and rival Weber State on Friday. They concluded the weekend with a 3-1 defeat to UC Riverside.

SUU (0-3) plays just once this week, opening the home portion of the schedule on Saturday, September 3. The T-birds will face off against Cal State Fullerton at 2 p.m.

Utah Valley

Utah Valley opened the campagin in the Utah Classic, going winless over the weekend.

The Wolverines fell 3-0 to No. 23 Kansas on Friday afternoon before losing 3-0 to Loyola Marymount in the evening. They ended the tournament with a 3-0 loss to in-state foe No. 22 Utah on Saturday.

UVU (0-3) plays three matches this week, looking for its first win of the season.

The Wolverines will play their home opener on Monday, facing Cal Poly at 6 p.m. They will then host the Utah Valley Invitational, beginning with a matchup with Cal on Thursday, September 1 at 5 p.m. UVU will conclude the tournament facing Northern Arizona on Saturday, September 3 at 2 p.m.
