FCS football review: SUU and Weber State win, Utah Tech falls in season openers
Utah Valley
Last season’s WAC Tournament runner-up, Utah Valley won both matches it played this week and has now gone five straight unbeaten.
UVU first beat Cal State Northridge 2-1 on Thursday night, highlighted by a Julianna Carter brace. The Wolverines then faced Idaho State on Saturday, crushing the Bengals 6-1.
Nicole Ray tallied a brace with goals in the 48th and 54th minutes against ISU, while Heather Stainbrook scored two of her own in the 66th and 67th minutes. With the win, UVU has now gone 11 straight matches at home without defeat.

The Wolverines (3-0-2) and their unbeaten record will face a pair of stiff tests this week. First, they’ll host Alabama on Tuesday, September 6 at 11 a.m. before facing No. 6 BYU in Provo on Saturday, September 10 at 6 p.m.
The match against the Crimson Tide can be seen on ESPN+, while the rivalry game versus the Cougars can be seen on BYUtv.
Utah Tech
Utah Tech kicked off the week on Monday, facing St. Thomas on the road. The Trailblazers came away with the 1-0 victory, thanks to a Karli Nyland goal in the 79th minute. The win was the first of the season for Utah Tech.
They followed it up with a match to close out the week against South Dakota at home on Sunday. With the game scoreless at halftime, the Trailblazers scored five times in the second half to run away with the match.
Lauren Buxton, Emily Garbett, Jaci Cook-Dandos, Nicole Scott, and Kasidee Lamb each recorded a goal versus the Coyotes.

Up next, Utah Tech (2-2) hosts a pair of matches this week. They’ll face Idaho State on Friday, September 9 at 7:30 p.m., followed by a game against in-state foe Weber State on Sunday, September 11 at 1:30 p.m. Both matches can be seen on ESPN+.
Southern Utah
SUU began this past week’s matches on Friday, hosting South Dakota. The T-birds came out on top, winning 2-0 to extend its winning streak to five games. You can read more about the match here.
SUU then faced Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, falling 2-1 in a tightly contested matchup. The loss was the first of the season for the T-birds.

No. 6 BYU
The Cougars had a bit of a mixed week, playing three matches while winning, drawing, and losing once each.
They began the week with a 2-2 draw against Colorado on Monday, followed by their first loss of the season to Alabama on Thursday, 3-2. BYU was able to end the week with a victory, blasting Cal State Northridge 5-0 on Saturday.
Brecken Mozingo put on a clinic versus the Matadors, scoring a brace with goals in the 44th and 84th minutes while adding an assist.

No. 6 BYU (3-1-1) hosts a pair of matches this week as they look to build off the win over CSUN. They first take on Arkansas at home on Thursday, September 8 at 7 p.m., followed by hosting in-state foe Utah Valley on Saturday, September 10 at 6 p.m. Both matches can be viewed on BYUtv.

The Aggies played just one match this week, recording a 0-0 draw on Thursday against UC Riverside. The tie extends Utah State’s season-opening unbeaten run to five games.

After falling 1-0 to Kansas State on Thursday, the Wildcats recorded a 2-1 over UC Riverside to close the week and get in the win column. Samantha Kearns scored in the 24th minute for Weber, while a Gentrey Gibson goal in the 41st sealed the victory.
