RSL needed three points at home, but lost yet again and will now likely miss the postseason.

Facing FC Cincinnati and needing a win to keep their dying playoff hopes alive, you would expect Real Salt Lake to play with a sense of urgency.

Instead, we got more of what we’ve seen in the second half of the season, and RSL is now almost guaranteed to be staying home for the playoffs.

Despite taking a 1-0 lead, Real managed to lose anyways. They blew the lead and then almost immediately had a chance to regain it, but a terrible penalty by Pablo Ruiz ended any hope of that happening.

Instead of playing as though they cared, they lied down again and let a team outclass them on their own home pitch.

Losing 2-1 likely ends Real Salt Lake’s playoff chances with only two matches left. They will now likely need to win both games and hope other teams lose for a chance at the last playoff berth.

An epic collapse

RSL has literally been in playoff position since the start of the year. Now 32 matches into a 34-game season, they’ve completely blown it.

Seeing the season start with such promise and then having it turn into this is a massive waste for everyone involved, especially for the fanbase.

Who knows what will happen when the season ends, but some real changes need to be made after such an embarrassing and pathetic collapse that turned the season into a major disappointment.

RSL now faces the LA Galaxy on the road Saturday, Oct. 1 at 8:30 p.m. The game can be seen on KMYU and streamed via the KSL TV app.
