The 2022 FCS football season has officially passed the first quarter mark, and we now have a result from a matchup of in-state opponents.

Southern Utah

Facing Western Illinois on the road just a week after facing the Utes, the T-birds struggled for much of the game.

Taking an early 10-0 lead in the opening quarter thanks to a 27-yard field goal and an Elijah Burns touchdown run, SUU’s offense sputtered in the next two quarters.

A strong T-birds defense kept the game close, but Western Illinois was able to fight back to make the score even at 10 in the final seconds.

Needing a big play to get into field goal range with under a minute to go, SUU went to the air after rushing the ball for the majority of the game.

Justin Miller unloaded a pass down the sideline, finding Isaiah Wooden for a 73-yard touchdown to give the T-birds a 16-10 lead. The PAT was converted after the touchdown to make the score 17-10 with just 33 seconds left for the SUU win.

The T-birds’ defense came up big in the win, forcing five Leathernecks turnovers.

No. 12 Weber State vs. Utah Tech

With both teams coming off of big wins the week prior, this game was a great measuring stick for the progress that had been made so far in the season.

Weber State scored the opening touchdown of the game just over a minute and a half in and never looked back. They capped off the scoring with a six-yard run by Damon Bankston at the 6:41 mark of the final quarter to make the score 44-14.

Bronson Barron threw for 368 yards and four touchdowns for the Wildcats, who are 3-0 to start a season for the first time in 24 years. Damon Bankston added 161 yards and a score on the ground for Weber State.
