Sitting tied atop the WAC standings with two games to play, could Utah Valley build off its winning streak and move closer to a championship?
College soccer: Scores from the past week as UVU women move into first place
Coming into the game riding a four-match winning streak, first-place UVU faced off against in-state foe Southern Utah.
While Utah Valley is looking to put the finishing touches on a conference championship season, Southern Utah needed a result to break into the sixth-place spot as they try to secure a conference tournament berth.
While SUU has set numerous school records this season, a recent run of tough results has left the T-birds in seventh place in the WAC standings, one spot out of a tournament spot.
The matchÂ
The Wolverines took control of this match early on and never let up. They were attacking for most of the game and were able to score five goals against SUU. The difference in shots taken by each team tells a lot of the story of this game. UVU tallied 29 shots, with 12 of them being on goal. At the same time, the Thunderbirds had only 3 shots taken, with none on target. The Wolverines were clearly the better team throughout the course of this game and the final score reflected just that.
Standout performers
There were a lot of UVU players that had great games, and Heather Stainbrook stood out as one of them. She had two of the Wolverines’ five goals on the night, finding the back of the net in the 19th and 69th minutes. Faith Webber also notched a brace for the Wolverines, scoring goals in the 28th and 39th minutes of the match.
Both Stainbrook and Webber had memorable matches, but perhaps the best player of the contest was midfielder Hannah Lee.
Lee had a goal for herself at the 66-minute mark while also making an impact seemingly everywhere on the pitch. On top of the goal she scored, she also assisted on a pair of goals.
Overall, UVU put on a first-class display in front of the home crowd, inching closer to winning the WAC regular season title.
