Facing in-state foe BYU in an away rematch, the Southern Utah Flippin’ Birds picked up a big win on Friday night to sweep the dual meets against the Cougars this season.

Tallying 197.125 on the scoresheet, SUU set a new program record for a road score, while also tallying the third-best total score in team history.

BYU recorded a score of 196.150 in the defeat.

Bars

SUU

Southern Utah tallied a 49.250 in its first routine, with Shylen Murakami leading the way with a 9.925. Mayson Bentley followed with a 9.850, while Caitlin Kho, Karley McClain, and Isabella Neff each recorded a 9.825 to round out the scoring on bars.

BYU

Bars was the second rotation for the Cougars, as they recorded a 49.225 score. Anna Bramblett recorded a meet-high 9.950 for BYU, with Anyssa Alvarado following with a 9.900 and Lindsey Hunter a 9.875. Kylie Eaquinto (9.775) and Jayda Lealaogata (9.725) finished up the scoring for the home team.

Vault

SUU

The Flippin’ Birds moved to the vault for their next rotation, posting a 49.225 score. Kayla Pardue led SUU with a 9.875 score, while Ellie Cacciola and Caitlin Kho were right behind with scores of 9.850. Karley McClain and Rachel Smith each added identical 9.825s to complete the rotation.

BYU

The Cougars scored 49.175 in their first event of the evening, led by a 9.900 by Sydney Benson. Sophie Dudley and Kylie Eaquinto both recorded scores of 9.850 for BYU, while Madison Raesly-Patton tallied a 9.825 and Rebekah Ripley added a 9.750.

Floor

SUU

The visitors moved to the floor for its third rotation, posting a 49.500. Both Karley McClain and Aubri Schwartze recorded 9.925 scores, while Taylor Gull followed with a season-high 9.900. Ellie Cacciola, Hailey Vultaggio, and Rachel Smith each tied for the last two scores of the event (9.875).

BYU

The floor was the final rotation for the home team, as they posted a score of 49.350. Rebekah Ripley led the Cougars with a 9.900, followed by identical scores of 9.875 from Sophie Dudley and Heidi Schooley. 9.850 scores from Sydney Benson and Elease Rollins rounded out BYU’s scoreline.

Beam

SUU

The Flippin’ Birds recorded a score of 49.150 in their final rotation. Rachel Smith tallied a 9.900 score, followed by a 9.875 score via Hailey Vultaggio. Karley McClain added a 9.850 score, alongside a 9.800 from Shylen Murakami and a 9.725 from Ellie Cacciola.

BYU

The beam was the third rotation for the Cougars, where they tallied a 48.400 score. Elease Rollins (9.950) and Madison Raesly-Patton (9.850) recorded the top scores for BYU, followed by a 9.800 from Mina Margraf. Sophie Dudley added a 9.750 and Lauren Ono scored a 9.050 to cap the rotation.

Flippin’ Birds’ historic season continues

With the win over BYU, SUU moves to 10-1 overall this season.

The T-birds are now unbeaten in Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference meets with a 4-0 record, notching wins over Utah State, Boise State, and BYU (twice).

Southern Utah has now lost just once on the season, where they finished as runners-up to No. 4 Utah in the Best of Utah meet.

The Flippin’ Birds will travel to Logan to face Utah State for the second time this season in their next meet.

SUU and USU will face off on Friday, February 17 at 7 p.m. The meet can be streamed via the Mountain West Network.

BYU

The Cougars will now travel to Boise State as they look to complete the dual meet season sweep over the Broncos.
