Battling rival Utah Tech on Senior Night, the SUU volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win in five sets on Monday night.

The opening set of the match was a tight back-and-forth affair, with the Trailblazers narrowly edging the T-birds, 26-24.

Determined to even the match, SUU began the second set on a 10-4 run. Utah Tech responded, however, taking 17 of the following 27 points to jump ahead 21-20. Not wanting to fall into a 2-0 hole, the T-birds put together a 5-1 run to take the set 25-22 and even the match at 1-1.

The two teams battled in set three, splitting the first 16 points. Tied at 8-8, Utah Tech took six of the next eight points to go in front 14-10. The Trailblazers were able to stop any SUU run to take the set 25-19, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth set was another tight one, with Utah Tech leading 19-18 and needing just six points to notch a victory. The T-birds had other ideas, scoring the next five points to take a 23-19 lead and moments later sealing the set win, 25-22.

SUU’s late momentum from the fourth set continued into the final frame, as the T-birds jumped out to a 6-0 advantage. SUU rode the hot streak to a 15-9 set victory, claiming the match 3-2.

The T-birds were led by 19 kills from Andrea Spasojevic, while Allison Rohrer notched 43 assists in the win.

Southern Utah improved to 6-18 overall (2-12 WAC) with the victory, while also securing a season split with rival Utah Tech.
