No. 22 BYU got a historic 34-28 win over Baylor on Saturday as the Cougars not only got their first Big 12 conference road win in program history but also beat Baylor on the road for the first time.

With the win, the Cougars improved to 5-0 on the season and most importantly, 2-0 in Big 12 play.

BYU opened the game with three touchdowns in 10 minutes to silence the home crowd at McLane Stadium. It wasn’t the four-touchdown performance in 7 minutes like the Cougars had last week in the win over then-No. 13 Kansas State, however, BYU head Coach Kalani Sitake couldn’t have asked for a better start as the Cougars jumped out to a 21-0 lead.

Quarterback Jake Retzlaff got the scoring going with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Miles Davis down the sideline.

Then on Baylor’s first play of the game, quarterback Sawyer Robertson’s pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage and BYU defensive end Blake Mangelson made a fantastic catch to give BYU the ball on the 20-yard line.

Four plays later, Retzlaff threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Chase Roberts to give BYU a quick 14-0 lead. After forcing Baylor to punt, the Cougar offense kept it going with a 7-play 69-yard drive which was capped off by a 17-yard rushing touchdown from Retzlaff.

The offense couldn’t be stopped as the Cougars even got a 54-yard field goal from Will Ferrin right before the half to take a commanding 31-14 lead into halftime. BYU had nearly 300 yards of total offense, but unfortunately, that didn’t carry over in the second half as the Cougars managed just 3 points and 81 yards of total offense, including two interceptions from Retzlaff.

But when the team needed stops, the Cougar defense came up big late in the fourth quarter by forcing a turnover on downs with two minutes to go, and then safety Crew Wakley sealed the game with an interception.
