Every week on Stadium Sportzz, we will be posting weekly reviews of the three major men’s college basketball programs in the state.

With college basketball season just underway, let’s take a look at the results for each of the teams as they push for a bid to the 2022 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Next up, BYU.

BYU Cougars (2-0)

With two wins from two, the Cougars seem to be on track to return to the NCAA Tournament in March.

Tuesday vs. Cleveland State – Won 69-59

Taking on the defending Horizon League Tournament winners to open the 2021-22 campaign, the Cougars recorded a victory at home at the Marriott Center.

Alex Barcello led the way for BYU, dropping 24 points, nailing all 13 of his free-throw attempts. Spencer Johnson added 13 off the bench.

As a team, BYU outrebounded the Vikings 41-31 while converting 22 of 27 free throws (81.5 percent).

Friday vs. San Diego State – Won 66-60

Playing San Diego State in Provo, the Cougars eked out a close win over the defending Mountain West regular season and tournament champions. 

Alex Barcello led the way yet again for BYU, scoring 17 points, while Tejon Lucas added 13. Fousseyni Traore chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds.

Up next

BYU now faces No. 13 Oregon in Portland on Tuesday, followed by a matchup with NAIA Central Methodist on Saturday at home. 

The game against the Ducks will tip off at 8 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN. The matchup against Central Methodist can be seen on BYUtv at 7 p.m.
