Every week on Stadium Sportzz, we will be posting weekly reviews of the three major men’s college basketball programs in the state.

With college basketball season just underway, let’s take a look at the results for each of the teams as they push for a bid to the 2022 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

First up, the Utah Utes.

Utah Runnin’ Utes (3-0)

After defeating Bethune-Cookman (FL), the Utes have begun the Craig Smith era 3-0, with all the victories coming on their home floor.

Tuesday vs. Abilene Christian – Won 70-56 

To open the Craig Smith era, the Utes took on the 2021 Southland Conference Tournament champions Abilene Christian.

David Jenkins Jr. led the Utes with 15 points, while Branden Carlson chipped in with 14. Utah State transfer Rollie Woerster added 12 points, seven rebounds, and six assists in the win.

As a team, the Utes outrebounded the Wildcats 55-29, while shooting 30.4 percent from downtown compared to 19 percent for Abilene.  

Saturday vs. Sacramento State  – Won 89-56

Branden Carlson scored a career-high 21 points to lead the Utes to a victory over the Sacramento State Hornets of the Big Sky Conference. Both Gach added 11 points off the bench for Utah in the win. 

As a team, the Utes outrebounded Sac State 58-29 while racking up 28 assists to the Hornets five. 

Monday vs. Bethune-Cookman – Won 86-55

David Jenkins Jr. scored 25 points as the Utes ran away from Bethune-Cookman of the SWAC.

Branden Carlson added 14 points and nine rebounds, while Both Gach added 11 off the bench.

Up next

The Utes have just one game remaining this week, taking on Boston College of the ACC on Saturday, November 20. The game takes place in Daytona Beach, Florida as part of the Sunshine Slam. The game takes place at 3 p.m. MT and can be seen on FloSports (subscription required).
