Every week on Stadium Sportzz, we will be posting weekly reviews of the three major men’s college basketball programs in the state.
With college basketball season just underway, let’s take a look at the results for each of the teams as they push for a bid to the 2022 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Utah State Aggies (4-1)
The Aggies traveled to Conway, South Carolina this week, winning three straight games to capture the Myrtle Beach Invitational championship.
Thursday vs. Penn – won 87-79 (2 OT)
Coming off a victory over Richmond, the Aggies looked to start a winning streak at the Myrtle Beach Invitational on Thursday.
Behind a career-high 33 points and 16 rebounds from Justin Bean, the Aggies recovered after letting a 12-point lead slip away to win in double overtime.
Rylan Jones added 21 points for Utah State, while Brandon Horvath chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Friday vs. New Mexico State – won 85-58
In a matchup of Aggies vs. Aggies, the ones in blue came out on top in blowout fashion.
Rylan Jones led the way for Utah State, scoring 19 points, while Justin Bean added 17. Brandon Horvath and Max Shulga contributed 12 and 11 points respectively.
As a team, the Aggies made 56.4 percent of their shot attempts, including 48.3 of their three-pointers (14 of 29). They also outrebounded New Mexico State 36-27 and tallied 22 assists.
Sunday vs. Oklahoma – won 73-70
In the championship game on Sunday afternoon, the Aggies won a close back-and-forth affair over the perennial postseason participant Oklahoma Sooners of the Big 12.
Justin Bean once again filled up the stat sheet for Utah State, scoring 24 points and grabbing 19 rebounds.
Brock Miller – who hit two clutch three-pointers down the stretch – added 16 points. Brandon Horvath scored 13 points, while RJ Eytle-Rock added 10.
Justin Bean was named the Myrtle Beach Invitational MVP, while Rylan Jones was named to the All-Tournament Team.
This is the Aggies’ first in-season tournament title since winning the 2019 Jersey Mike’s Jamaica Classic.

The Aggies now head back to Logan for a matchup against the Texas-Arlington Mavericks of the Sun Belt Conference on Saturday night.
