FCS football weekly: Weber State dominates Utah Tech, SUU wins nail-biter

Southern Utah

Friday’s match

After a nearly two-week break, SUU was more than eager to kick off WAC play this week.

Facing Texas Rio Grande Valley on Friday, the T-birds fell behind 1-0 for the first time this season. Still trailing heading into the halftime break, SUU needed to come out strong in the second half to avoid back-to-back defeats.

The T-birds found the equalizer just over 10 minutes into the second half, thanks to a goal from Kate Schirmer.

With the score now tied, SUU took control of the momentum of the match. A minute and a half later they took the 2-1 lead via another Schirmer goal.

The T-birds’ defense held strong for the final 35 minutes of play as SUU completed the comeback victory to begin conference play 1-0.

Sunday’s match

Facing Stephen F. Austin to finish the week, SUU was looking for just its second 2-0 start to conference play in program history.

With the game scoreless and the clock winding down, it seemed as though the T-birds would have to settle for a draw with the Lumberjacks.

Enter Addison Larsen, who with just over three minutes to go, fired a shot from distance past the keeper’s right side into the back of the net for the 1-0 victory.

Megan Short tallied seven saves in goal for the T-birds, tying a season-high. Whitney Wangsgard assisted on the game-winning goal, notching her third assist in the last two matches.

Utah Tech was then able to keep the Lumberjacks at bay for 75 minutes, securing another shutout win.

Sunday’s match

Squaring off with Texas Rio Grande Valley to cap off the week, the Trailblazers struggled to get much going offensively throughout much of the match.

Then with only five minutes remaining in the game, Emily Garbett fired an absolute rocket from 20 yards away. The shot beat the Vaqueros’ keeper and tucked perfectly away into the top left corner for the 1-0 win.
