With three weeks passed in the 2022 college football season, where will BYU, Utah, and Utah State go bowling?
FCS football weekly: Weber State dominates Utah Tech, SUU wins nail-biter
No. 13 Utah
After a disappointing loss to Florida to open the season, the Utes have rebounded nicely since.
Utah has handled both Southern Utah and San Diego State, outscoring the two teams 108-14. Both the offense and defense appear to have improved and a Pac-12 title is still very much in reach, as well as the Rose Bowl bid that goes with it.
The Utes open conference play this week, facing an Arizona State team that is in turmoil with a recent coaching change. They can’t afford to slip up against an inferior opponent if they still aim to have a memorable year.
Projection: Rose Bowl Game
Opponent: Michigan
Date: Monday, January 2
Location: Rose Bowl – Pasadena, CA
Time and channel: 3 p.m. MT, ESPN
No. 19 BYU
Coming off a thrilling victory over then No. 9 Baylor, BYU was looking to notch back-to-back wins over ranked opponents while continuing to move up the polls themselves.
Instead, the Cougars were hit in the mouth by then No. 25 Oregon on the road, getting thoroughly outplayed in a 41-20 loss.
The loss not only drops BYU in the national rankings, but it also virtually eliminates them from New Year’s Six bowl game contention. The Cougars would likely need to win out to secure and an invitation, but that seems highly unlikely with games against No. 10 Arkansas, rival Utah State, and Boise State still on the schedule.
Projection: Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl
Opponent: Tulane
Date: Thursday, December 22
Location: Amon G. Carter Stadium – Fort Worth, TX
Time and channel: 5:30 p.m. MT, ESPN
Utah State
The Aggies did were on a bye this past weekend, and it couldn’t have come at a more needed time.
Back-to-back losses to Alabama and Weber State has Utah State 1-2 overall with UNLV coming to Logan on Saturday. The Rebels appear to be much better this season than in seasons past, and the Aggies desperately need a win to try and get the season back on track.
However, a loss to Weber State in their last game still keeps the Aggies out of this week’s bowl projections.
