Utah football: Utes pull away in second half for fourth straight win

SUU traveled to face No. 25 Eastern Kentucky, falling in a close 35-28 contest.

The Thunderbirds and Colonels traded scores from the start, with EKU scoring first before SUU answered early in the second quarter when Joe Davis scored from five yards out.

After Eastern Kentucky retook the lead, the T-birds tied the game at 14-14 when Justin Miller threw a 1-yard touchdown to Steve Jenkins at the 6:07 mark of the second quarter.

The Colonels scored again before halftime to make the score 21-14.

The T-birds answered with just over five minutes left in the third period when Isaiah Wooden ran 9 yards for the score to tie it at 21 apiece.

EKU scored to make it 28-21 with just under two minutes left in the third. SUU responded again, this time with Isaiah Williams catching a 19-yard touchdown from Miller to make it 28 all at the start of the final frame.

The Colonels regained the lead with just over six minutes to go, making the score 35-28. The T-birds needed to score on the next drive to extend the game but found themselves seven yards short on third down.

Needing to keep the drive alive, SUU gained just five yards, setting up 4th down and 2. Miller found Williams but EKU read the play perfectly, with Williams losing two yards and ending any chance for a T-birds win.

Justin Miller led the SUU offense, completing 21-of-29 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns. The T-birds gained 177 yards on the ground via seven different players, with Bobby Cole leading the way picking up 64 yards on eight carries.

SUU (3-2, 1-0 WAC) now returns to Cedar City to resume WAC play next. The T-birds will face Tarleton State on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m.

Utah State football: Aggies show fight, promise in loss to BYU

Utah Tech

Facing Abilene Christian at home, the Trailblazers lost for the third straight time.

Utah Tech took a slim 10-6 lead into halftime, but the second half was all Abilene.

The Wildcats outscored the Trailblazers 20-0, handing them a second straight loss in WAC play.

Utah Tech (1-4, 0-2 WAC) now has a bye week before traveling to Northern Iowa on Oct. 15.

The undefeated Wildcats (4-0, 1-0 Big Sky) were on a bye this week. They’ll host Eastern Washington on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. next. The game can be seen on KJZZ or ESPN+.
