FCS football: Weber State remains perfect, SUU falls in shootout

Utah Tech

Women’s team

Playing a pair of WAC matches this past week, Utah Tech recorded two wins to move to the top of the standings. With three straight victories, the Trailblazers are now on a 10-match unbeaten run (9 wins, 1 draw).

Friday’s match

Facing Sam Houston at home, Utah Tech recorded a 1-0 win. Brynlee Roberts scored the winning goal in the 54th minute, setting up a showdown with first-place New Mexico State on Sunday.

Sunday’s match

Facing the top team in the WAC, Utah Tech dominated from start to finish for a 3-1 win over New Mexico State.

Savannah Staufer scored in the 33rd minute to give the Trailblazers the lead before Utah Tech forced the Aggies into a mistake on a corner kick in the 43rd minute for an own goal and a 2-0 score.

Utah Tech tallied added a third goal in the 52nd minute when Emily Garbett scored her third of the season.

New Mexico State made the score 3-1 in the 55th minute, but the three goals were more than enough to send the Trailblazers to the top of the WAC standings.

Up next

Utah Tech is now 9-2-1 overall, including first place in the WAC with a 5-0-1 record.

The Trailblazers don’t have a full game scheduled for this week, but they will finish the second half of a previous match that was impacted by weather.

Utah Tech will play the final 45 minutes at Southern Utah on Friday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. The remainder of the match can be seen on ESPN+, with the Trailblazers holding a 1-0 advantage.

Men’s team

Utah Tech men’s team played twice this week, setting for a pair of draws on the road.

The Trailblazers drew 1-1 with Texas Rio Grande Valley on Friday before again battling to a 1-1 score against Houston Baptist on Sunday.

Utah Tech (3-7-2, 1-1-2 WAC) will play two home conference matches this week.

First, they’ll take on Seattle on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. before facing San Jose State on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1:30 pm.

Week 6 Bowl Projections: Postseason destinations for Utah, BYU, and USU

Southern Utah

Playing two matches this past week, SUU fell in the first match before rebounding with a big win on Sunday.

Sunday’s match

After falling 2-0 on the road to first-place New Mexico State on Friday, the T-birds returned to Cedar City on Sunday looking to get back on track.

Facing Sam Houston, SUU took an early 1-0 lead in the fifth minute, thanks to a goal from Whitney Wangsgard.

Sammie Sofonia added a goal in the 34th minute, giving the home side the 2-0 lead that held steady for the victory.

Recording its ninth win of the season, SUU has now set a new program single-season record for wins, topping the 2015 team that won eight.

The victory also moves SUU to third in the WAC standings, just one point off second with two matches in hand.

Up next

The T-birds (9-2-1, 4-1-1 WAC) don’t have a full match scheduled this week but will finish the second half of a previous game postponed by inclement weather.

SUU will finish the second 45 minutes against Utah Tech on Friday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. The game can be seen on ESPN+, with Utah Tech leading the T-birds 1-0 when play resumes.

BYU

Playing two matches, BYU recorded a big win before ending the week with a draw.

The Cougars crushed San Francisco 6-0 on Wednesday, before setting for a 1-1 away draw with Pacific on Saturday.

The Cougars will host Portland on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast on BYUtv or through the BYUtv app.

Utah

The Utes split a pair of games, falling in a close contest before recording a big win to end the week.

After losing 1-0 against Oregon on Thursday, Utah rebounded with a 6-0 win over Oregon State on Sunday.

The Utes will travel to Arizona State on Friday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. The match can be seen on the Pac-12 Networks.
