Women’s volleyball: Utah State, UVU go undefeated to highlight week of matches

Utah Tech Trailblazers

After falling to Sacramento State in the season opener, Utah Tech faced off against Division II Chadron State at home needing a win.

With the score tied at 7 heading into halftime, it seemed like the Trailblazers could be on upset alert against the Eagles.

Instead, Utah Tech pulled away in half number two, aided by a strong performance on the ground by Quali Conley and a defense that forced five turnovers.

The Trailblazers scored three touchdowns in the third quarter, the first coming from an interception returned for a score by Kaejin Smith-Bejgrowicz for the 14-7 lead.

Utah Tech made the score 21-7 later in the quarter when quarterback Kobe Tracy found Malcolm Ross-Turner from seven yards out for the score.

Darrius Nash then picked off another Chadron State pass, this time setting up a 1-yard score by Quali Conley for the 28-7 advantage.

Utah Tech added four more touchdowns in the final period while allowing only a field goal in return to secure a dominating 56-10 victory.

The Trailblazers rushed for 163 yards in the game, led by Conley’s 139 yards on 21 carries. He also added three scores in what was his first career 100-yard rushing game. Kobe Tracy added 388 yards passing and three touchdowns through the air for the Utah Tech offense.

No. 16 Weber State Wildcats

Facing the defending Mountain West champion Utah State Aggies, it was expected that Weber State would hang tough but ultimately fall on the road on Saturday.

Instead, they pulled off perhaps the biggest win in program history, thoroughly punishing the Aggies in a 35-7 victory.

Getting on the board with a field goal to take the lead, the Aggies scored a touchdown to take a 7-3 lead. While many expected Utah State to lead the rest of the way, the Wildcats outscored the home team 28-0 the rest of the way.

The Wildcats racked up 401 yards of offense to just 283 for Utah State, with 202 coming through the air and 199 on the ground. Josh Davis led the rushing attack for Weber, picking up 94 yards and a touchdown.

The Wildcat defense also came to play, intercepting four Aggie passes as Weber picked up its first win over an FBS opponent since 1993.
